Teacher: The topic of today’s discussion is “Advertising as a career in
business”.

While-listening task:
T.: Will you stand up. Now listen to the text, when you hear the word
you’ve just found, you may sit down. Be ready to give the title of the story:
“There were two interesting new
items in the paper some time ago. One was about a man who received a bill from
the telephone company for 999,999,00 $ - for three months.
The other was about a man who received 2,000 $ a month – for doing
nothing.
The connection between the two
news items is simple: computers – the worst invention of the 20-th century. The telephone bill came from a
computer which made a horrifying mistake: the man’s real bill was only 21,36 $.
The other item was not so amusing. A man walked into the unguarded computer
room of a large packaged food company and expertly programmed the computer to
pay him 2,000 $ a month for raw meat which he “supplied” to the company. The
computer wrote out a check, and even “signed” it. It was only a random check
that uncovered the trick. It could be happening in thousands of other companies
all over the world.
Computers are not the
miracle-workers that some people say they are. They make mistakes, they’re
often slower than humans, and they’re easily fooled, The US army used to
conscript people with the help of a computer, The army sent out the card which
had to be filled in and sent back. It was easy to avoid being called up, simply
by candle-wax on the card. The computer couldn’t read the card and did nothing
with it.”
Post-reading task:

P.: To my mind the title of the story may be “Anti-advertisement of
computers”. I’m sure that computers are necessary nowadays.

P: It’s obviously that money spent in advertising company will return
with the great profit to the customer, I’m sure that advertisement is the
“engine” of a trade. The better the product or the service will be bought the
bigger and it’ll be the profit of the seller. So the customer must spend enough
money to organize a good advertising company to bring him good money.
VI. Reading:
Pre-reading task:
T.: Will you read these advertisements from various papers. Each is
funny because of some mistake in the wording. Find what is strange about it and
then correct.
“Front room, suitable for two ladies or two gentlemen,
make use of a kitchen.”
“Buy your car directly from the factory 100% cheaper.”
“Wanted – farm horse. Must be reasonable.”
“For sale a cow, giving 3 gallons of milk, 2 dozen chickens, and a
cooker.”
“Spend your holiday on Queen Elizabeth. Luxurious accommodation.”
“Buy “Shiny” stockings. A lot of women wear nothing else.”
“Why go elsewhere to be cheated when you can come to our department
store?”
“Tombstone slightly used. Sells cheap.”
In a shop window: “15 men’s wool suits for 6 $ each one. They
won’t last an hour!”
Post-reading task:

VII. Summing – up:

Невдалий день

В нашім домі є біда …
Телевізор зветься, я лише сяду на диван
Враз хтось обізветься: «Прибери від пульта руки!»
Тато скаже й тупне.
«Та іди учить уроки», крикне мама з кухні.
Треба тут уже піти, хоч для виду спершу,
Написати « 2 + 3», на цьому і завершить.
А тоді, як стане зручно, увімкнути ледь-ледь гучно,
І молитися до Бога, щоб не вчула мати того,
Чи то я такий фартовий, чи то стіни із картону,
Та мене вже засікли й курс моралі провели,
Ну, а тато вже лякає, якщо знов мене впіймає,
Візьме дрель чи молоток і на друзки розламає
Цей пластмасовий шматок!
Але ці казки я знаю, він ще більше зависає,
Бо як він на спорт наткнеться,
То терпіння в мене рветься –
То радіє, то волає, пляшки з пива розкидає,
В мами теж не з сталі нерви,тільки діждеться перерви
Видасть татові кпиня: «Не сміти в кімнаті, Федю,
Ти ж людина, не свиня!»

Історія кохання …
Вона – краса, вона, як ніч безхмарна
Із зорями, що пишуть нам життям.

У ті два сонця, що горять так лячно,

Весняне прибирання
Березень несе розраду від зимових буднів,
Прибирає чийсь поріг і вулицю безлюдну.
Омиває все дощами, наче із гармати,
І міські новенькі вілли, і селянські хати.
Витягає зелень трав із землі брудної,
Застеляє в полі килим з пшениці ярової.
А в будинку світло й чисто наче у палаці.
Ніжна веснонька прийшла, вже пора до праці.
